Introduction to
Bocas del Toro Real Estate

Heart-stirring and unspoiled, Bocas del Toro is one of Panama’s best-kept secrets. With stretches of palm-studded, white sand beaches, this archipelago is a tropical lover’s dream destination, a paradise nestled in the Caribbean coast of Central America.

Getting to Bocas del Toro starts with a 45-minute to an hour plane ride from Panama City. A bus or a car will then take you from the airport to Bocas’ Almirante Port, which can take about 10 hours. Finally, a boat or ferry will bring you to Isla Colón, the province’s main island.

The journey is worth the destination. Bocas del Toro is an eco-tourism hotspot encompassing the northwestern tip of mainland Panama and a chain of islands dotting the Caribbean Sea. It borders turquoise waters to the north, the Chiriquí Province to the south, Costa Rica’s Limón Province to the west, and the indigenous region of Ngöbe-Buglé to the east.

Bocas del Toro covers an area of nearly 1,800 square miles. It consists of hundreds of islands, of which only six are inhabited. The main island is the seat of government where you’ll find the region’s hub for ecological wonders. The luxuriant environment is of economic importance to its people, attracting tourists into the province and empowering its community.

A PEEK INTO BOCAS DEL TORO’S PAST

Bocas Del Toro, Panama Map

Bocas del Toro was originally inhabited by the indigenous Ngobe-Bugle, Teribe (Nazo), Bokota, and Bri Bri people.  Christopher Columbus first set eyes on the archipelago in 1502 when he was looking for a place to dock and repair his ships.

During the 19th century, Scottish and English families from British Caribbean territories began living in Bocas del Toro to evade tax payments. Many of the slaves they brought with them chose to stay on the island when slavery was abolished.

The construction of the Panama and Colon railroad, the rise of banana farms, and the construction of the Panama Canal in 1903 also led to the settlement of thousands of Afro-Antilleans in the region. Along with the province’s indigenous groups, these people are now the locals that make Bocas del Toro a rich cultural community with vibrant customs, cuisines, and character.

What's in a name

“Bocas del Toro” is the pish term for “mouth of the bull.” Various tales surround the origins of the archipelago’s name, which remains a mystery to this day.

Many believe “Bocas del Toro” was named by Christopher Columbus after seeing the archipelago’s waterfalls forming a bull’s mouth. Others argue that the name originated from the sound of the waves crashing against a massive rock, which resembles a bull’s roar. Meanwhile, some locals believe that the area’s last “cacique” or chieftain was known as “Boka Toro,” which could be where the region’s name was derived.

But no matter how this stunning Panamanian province got its name, one thing’s for sure: Bocas del Toro is where expats, entrepreneurs, nature lovers, and people with off-grid lifestyles can escape. In this tropical hideaway,  the sand is fine, the waters are clear, and the views are sublime.
